Over 200 adults aged 50+ in Hertfordshire are improving health and social connections through new badminton initiative

Hertfordshire Badminton Association, in partnership with Herts Sport & Physical Partnership and Sport England, have shared the impact of their innovative 'Live Longer Better with Badminton' project. This countywide initiative has helped increase physical activity among older adults, improve health and wellbeing, and fostered stronger community connections through the sport of badminton.

Since its launch in January 2024, the project has seen remarkable results, including the creation of over 15 new badminton classes engaging more than 200 participants aged 50 and over. Many participants have reported significant health benefits, including improved fitness, mental wellbeing, and social interaction. Several have even progressed to higher levels of play, thanks to targeted coaching and community support. Those that have been members since September 2024 such as Jeff & Maggs from the Woodhall classes said

We thoroughly look forward to seeing everyone on Mondays. It is great fun and of course great way to keep fit and mental wellness

One of the Badminton activators at Broxbourne Ian Robinson said

One of the regulars Stuart uses these sessions as rehabilitation for his knee and another regular couple, John and Brenda have now joined their Leisure centre so they get an extra free court to play during the week to hire.

Overall, the project has demonstrated how sport can support healthier lifestyles, reduce social isolation, and improve quality of life, especially in areas that stand to benefit most from increased activity. It has also showcased how partnerships between local authorities, community groups, and governing bodies can deliver meaningful, lasting change.
